Thought of the day

Finding the perfect gift is a worthy pursuit and goal.

It’s a great idea.

But is it possible?

If your cup is half empty then finding the perfect gift is just as likely as buying a winning lottery ticket; wishful thinking.

If your cup is half full then finding the perfect gift is a pursuit that could be obtained.

Today’s thought of the day is a question and answer…

The question: can you transform the pursuit of finding the perfect gift from a pursuit that could be successful to one that more than likely will be successful?

The answer: yes!

How? By scheduling the steps that you need to take to find the perfect gift in advance.

James Clear explains in his article about motivation that intention and motivation are important, but if you want to be successful then you need to schedule. Drawing on a study published in British Journal of Health Psychology, research has found scheduling actions greatly improve your chances of success. How can we apply this to finding the perfect gift? In the example of finding a birthday present for your mother:

  1. 3 months before your mother’s birthday schedule a time in your calendar to call your mother and see what she would like for her birthday. Pretty obvious step, but these conversations can be forgotten by the time her actual birthday comes around.
  2. 2 months before your mother’s birthday schedule a time in your calendar to decide what to buy your mother, how much you’re going to spend, and whereabouts you might get the gift from. If you can’t decide, then set schedule a time in about a week to decide what to buy your mother. (Repeat until you decide what to buy.)
  3. 1 month before your mother’s birthday schedule a time in your calendar to buy the actual gift. Hopefully the perfect gift. If the gift is being purchased locally then a month is plenty of time. Is the gift is purchased online then a month is a reasonable amount of time. If the gift is a custom gift being personalized from the other side of the world from people who speak a different language then a month may not be enough!
  4. On the actual birthday schedule a time to give the present! It would be a huge fail to go through all that effort and then forget to gift it!

Be smart. Finding the perfect gift can be achieved, and to do so make sure you schedule time before the event to help make this happen.
